Blue combustion

1996

Marco Nereo Rotelli  (Venezia, 1955)

A "historical" work by Marco Nereo Rotelli, dating back to the first phase - more markedly pictorial - of the production of the Venetian artist, today known above all for his research on light that has led him to create grand light installations all over the world, both within urban contexts and against the backdrop of nature landscapes.

The artist donated the painting to the Museum in 2016, as a sign of homage to the town of Casalmaggiore where he lived for many years before moving permanently to Milan. One finds in this work, characterized by the richness of the blue pigment – a color particularly beloved by Rotell – and by the burns of the fibers of glass wool that run through the layered surfaces, some graphic symbols that recall forgotten alphabets and pictographic writings.

Over the years Rotelli has created an interrelationship between art and the different disciplines of knowledge, involving philosophers, musicians, photographers, filmmakers in his research, but mainly his relationship is with poetry that, over time, has become a constant reference for his work.

In this work we can already see the process of materialization of the poetic word that over the years Rotelli has then realized by experimenting with different materials, marble books, chromed steel, recycled doors... unusual supports in which the word or entire handwritten verses make the relationship with poetry indissoluble. Major contemporary Italian poets have collaborated assiduously with the artist, and not only. Among them the Chinese Yang Lian, author of the work exhibited in this room and also a gift from Marco Nereo Rotelli.
