So are the woods

1966

Goliardia Padova  (Casalmaggiore, 1909 - Parma, 1979)

This work is highly representative of the painting method of Goliardo Padova, who can be defined as an anti-panoramic painter. His natural vision is in fact short and narrow: the painter finds his dimension in the woods near Agoiolo, in their willows and bramble tangles around a water puddle overflown by birds.

His starting point is rooted in the observed reality, reworked by the artist who searches for a balance between the things he sees and the emotions they trigger. He transforms the reality in something strongly expressive, twisting it in a fantastic and visionary way.

Although he is a nature painter, Goliardo Padova doesn’t paint en plein air, but he prefers to rework in his mind the emotion he felt watching the landscape. In 1969, he wrote to his friend Aleandro Lazzarini: “One can paint even while having a walk, and without colors. I need to expand myself on the things, to paint them inside of me before painting them on the canvas. A world of color racks up in me and then I must pour it out to free myself. I can’t see but things animated by colors”.
